The Huskies are ready to roll! In this episode of Kunes Car Convo, we caught up with members of the Northern Illinois University Women’s Basketball team — Alysia, Lexi, and Kenzie — for a conversation that had it all: hoops, cars, and even a little singing.
As always, our Kunes Car Convo is about connecting great people, great stories, and great rides. This time, it was all about team spirit, hard work, and a few laughs along the way.
Why NIU? It’s All About the People
When asked why they chose Northern Illinois University, all three players lit up with pride and appreciation.
“Honestly, it was just the people for me,” Alysia shared. “The atmosphere, the coaches — especially Coach Brooks — really made the difference.”
Lexi nodded in agreement. “Coach Brooks is such a great human being. She wants to see us succeed, and we definitely have the tools to make it happen. The culture here is special.”
Kenzie added, “The program is incredible. The coaching staff is so supportive and communicative — it feels like a family. The culture here is something people should want to be a part of.”
That family energy was obvious the moment the team started talking. You could tell they weren’t just teammates — they were sisters.
Off the Court: Volleyballs, Track Shoes, and Music
When the conversation turned to what they’d play if basketball wasn’t an option, the answers came fast.
Kenzie smiled, “Definitely volleyball — that’s what I played back in the day.”
Lexi said she’d take up tennis, while Alysia laughed and claimed she’d “probably run track.”
But things really got fun when the topic turned to who could actually sing on the team.
Alysia gave the nod to Kenzie as the team’s best singer, and that kicked off a mini talent show. Soon, Lexi and Kenzie were trading lyrics from Miley Cyrus’s “Party in the U.S.A.” and a few lines from Tate McRae’s “Revolving Doors.”
Let’s just say, the Huskies might have a future duo in the making — or at least some entertaining road trip karaoke sessions.
Beyond Basketball: Faith, Friends, and Milo the Dog
Off the court, these athletes know the importance of balance and mental wellness.
Alysia shared, “I like to relax, meditate, read, and take my dog Milo out for walks.”
Kenzie added, “When I’m not on the court, I love being around my friends and family. I pray a lot, meditate, and spend time in my Bible. I’m definitely a people person.”
For Lexi, it’s all about connection and calm. “I love meeting new people here at NIU. Otherwise, I like to just chill, watch movies, and unwind.”
Their off-court focus on faith, friendship, and personal growth clearly fuels their energy on the hardwood.
Team Spirit and High Expectations
As the new season approaches, optimism is running high.
“I really like this group of girls,” Alysia said. “We’re supportive, hardworking, and always laughing together. I have high hopes for this team.”
Kenzie agreed: “This is a hardworking group. We all want to see each other succeed — it’s going to be a great season.”
Lexi wrapped it up perfectly: “We’ve shown so much growth already. We’re ready to give 100% every day, whether it’s practice or game time. We got this.”
With that kind of drive and chemistry, the Huskies are clearly gearing up for something special this year.
Driving Style: Sport Mode and Friendly Debates
No Kunes Car Convo would be complete without a little chat about driving.
Alysia was quick to admit she likes a little speed: “I’d say I’m a good driver. I like to go fast — sometimes I put it in sport mode!”
But her teammates weren’t quite as confident about Kenzie’s driving skills.
“If you want to make it out alive, don’t get in a car with her!” one joked, as everyone burst into laughter.
Lexi, on the other hand, earned some approval as the group’s designated good driver — though with this crew, we’re not sure there’s a clear consensus!
First Impressions at Kunes Auto Group
After some friendly competition and fun conversation, the team toured Kunes Auto Group, the official auto group of NIU Athletics.
“I was very impressed by what I saw,” Alysia said.
Kenzie added with a grin, “I’m definitely coming back. I’ll be buying my first car here — my dream car — when the time comes!”
Lexi was just as excited: “It was such a welcoming atmosphere. Everyone was so supportive, and the cars were absolutely sick. That G-Wagon is coming home with me someday.”
From laughter to leadership, the NIU Women’s Basketball team brought their energy and positivity to the Kunes showroom — reminding us that teamwork, trust, and great vibes never go out of style.
Go Huskies — and Go Kunes!
Kunes Auto Group is proud to support NIU Athletics and the incredible women representing the Huskies on and off the court.
